(Sept. 26, 2006) -- NASA Astronaut (retired) Capt. John Young recently presented National Weather Service Spaceflight Meteorology Group (SMG) Lead Forecaster Karl Silverman with a 35-year Department of Commerce "Length of Service" certificate and pin. John Young flew on NASA Gemini and Apollo missions, walked on the moon and was the Commander of the first Space Shuttle mission in 1981.

Karl Silverman has worked at SMG since 1994, and has worked for the National Weather Service since 1971. He has supported 54 Shuttle missions, including nine missions as the Lead Forecaster.

"Weather is just real challenging for NASA -- especially in Florida," said Capt. Young. "We just couldn't do this launch and landing job without great weather support from Karl and others at Spaceflight Meteorology Group."
