(Oct. 19-20, 2006) -- Shreveport Weather Forecast Office (WFO) Warning Coordination Meteorologist Mark Frazier and Forecaster Bill Parker met with up to 1,000 science teachers at the 2006 Louisiana on Science Teacher's Association state conference in Shreveport. The event provided an opportunity to promote the science of weather through educational curriculum and the JetStream website (http://www.srh.weather.gov/jetstream).
WFO Shreveport presented recently developed educational curriculum to 60 teachers during a formal training session. Several hundred additional teachers signed up to receive the curriculum while visiting an information booth sponsored by the office. The topics included The Atmosphere, Thunderstorms and Weather Forecasting. According to the teachers, the key to the curriculum was the correlation between the lesson material and the Grade Level Expectations of the Louisiana State Comprehensive Curriculum.
The response from all of the teachers was overwhelmingly positive. Total attendance at the two day event was over 2,000 science and math teachers.
