(April 25, 2006) -- Lower Colorado River Authority Floodplain Management Specialist Roy Sedwick has been awarded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Environmental Hero Award. Steven Cooper, deputy regional director, National Weather Service Southern Region, presented the award at the 19th annual Texas Floodplain Manager's Association conference in Abilene, Texas. He was honored for his tireless efforts in support of a wide range of National Weather Service severe weather preparedness and dissemination programs.

An invaluable asset to the West Gulf River Forecast Center and Weather Forecast Offices throughout West Central and South Texas, Sedwick has been a strong supporter of NWS programs such as SKYWARN, StormReady®, Turn Around, Don't Drown® and NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards.

He recently advised WFO San Angelo on its campaign to increase ownership of the all hazards radios in West Central Texas. He has been actively involved in communicating the TADD slogan through the purchase and distribution of 20,000 bumper stickers across the state. He also secured grants to fund a number of outreach efforts targeting children. They include Owlie SKYWARN coloring books, TADD puzzles and a "Go Fish for Flood Safety" traveling fish pond booth.

Sedwick worked with WFO Austin-San Antonio to help organize a series of NWS Partner's Workshops on the "Hill Country Urbanization and Flash Flood Threat" in the Austin-San Antonio area. His leadership of the Texas Floodplain Managers Association has also given the River Forecast Center and the forecast offices a major forum to reach customers and partners with vital, life-saving hydrologic and meteorological information.
