Deputy Secretary of Commerce Theodore Kassinger visited the National Weather Service Southern Region's Spaceflight Meteorology Group (SMG) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, October 14. Secretary Kassinger toured the SMG operations area, received a demonstration of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) and the Meteorological Integrated Data Display System (MIDDS).

NASA Flight Director Steve Stich described the importance of weather support to the manned space flight program and outlined Shuttle Return-to-Flight efforts. Secretary Kassinger also visited the NASA Space Radiation Analysis Group (SRAG), which advises Mission Control on space weather information supplied by the NWS Space Environment Center. He also toured the Space Shuttle and International Space Station Mission Control Centers.

The Spaceflight Meteorology Group's mission is to provide unique world-class weather support to the US Human Spaceflight effort by:
  • Providing weather forecasts and briefings to NASA personnel
  • Providing pre and post spaceflight weather analyses and documentation
  • Advising the JSC community of adverse weather impacting the JSC complex
  • Serving as meteorological consultants to the JSC community for current and future spaceflight endeavors
  • Developing tools and techniques to enhance SMG's weather support and to improve the science of meteorology.
