WFO Midland Participates in Marfa Lights Festival
SOO Jeffrey Cupo and forecaster Seth Nagle staffed the National Weather Service booth at this year's Marfa Lights Festival in Marfa, TX. The festival, which celebrates the mysterious lights seen in the desert east of town for more than a century, took place on September 4th & 5th and provided the perfect opportunity for awareness outreach.
Jeff feels events, such as Marfa's festival, are the perfect venue for reaching the public. "Whenever you can piggyback on another event's popularity, it really becomes a win-win for everyone."
Through their efforts, both Jeff & Seth were able to provide myriad information to those visiting the booth. Outreach included information on the NOAA Weather Radio, severe weather preparedness, product definitions, as well as the whereabouts of Hurricane Frances. In fact, the most popular item was the hurricane-tracking chart, which is not normally the case due to Midland's inland location. "Halfway through the festival, chart supplies were completely exhausted," Seth Nagle commented.
Jeff & Seth also met with members of the Big Bend Amateur Radio Community. This club has been a vital link in Skywarn operations for southwest portions of the Midland CWA for a number of years. Jeff was heartened by the fact that there were "quite a few people out there who are actively watching the weather as a hobby, regardless of whether it's currently affecting them." |
