Even reports of hail and wind damage could not stop 50 cooperative observers and their guests from attending the first Cooperative Observer Appreciation Day, held at the WFO in Jackson, Miss.
Cooperative observers from the Jackson County Warning Area had an opportunity to meet other observers, interact with WFO employees and see first hand how their data is used. Mississippi Climatologist, Dr. Charles Wax, says data from the National Weather Service's Cooperative Observer Network is used in "everything from wedding planning to engineering studies."
Lora Wilson, an employee of the Mississippi State University Geosciences Major and Student Career Experience Program, organized the event with assistance from WFO Jackson staff members. She said the Cooperative Observer Appreciation Day was organized so that "we could show the observers they are appreciated."
WFO Jackson Meteorologist-in-Charge Alan Gerard added, "The cooperative observers provide a tremendous service to the public by providing climate records and real-time weather information. We enjoyed the opportunity to honor them with this day." |
