National Weather Service Honors Clarksville, TN for 150 years of Service
 |
Dudley Rives, superintendent of the Clarksville Waste Water Treatment Plant, accepts a plaque from NWS Nashville's MIC Larry Vannozzi honoring the City's 150th anniversary of taking weather observations as plant co-workers look on. |
The National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office in Nashville, Tenn. honored the City of Clarksville for taking weather observations for the last 150 years. The first of two ceremonies was held October 7th at the city's Waste Water Treatment Plant, where employees currently log weather observations every night at midnight. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the plant has a total of 22 employees who take turns recording and reporting precipitation and temperature data to the Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Nashville. A second ceremony was held later in the day at the City Council Chambers in downtown Clarksville.
WFO Nashville Meteorologist-in-Charge Larry Vannozzi noted the city has maintained a continuous stream of valuable weather information since 1854. He said the 150 years of data represents a priceless historical climate record for the Clarksville area. "There is just no doubt that this is incredibly rare," he added.
The plant's station is one of 250 NWS cooperative observer locations serving the state of Tennessee -- and one of more than 11,000 serving the nation. For more information on the National Weather service Cooperative Observer Program, visit: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/coop. |
