POLICY REFERENCES STORM DATA AND UNUSUAL  WEATHER REPORTS

REFERENCE: WSOM Chapter F-42

ISSUED BY:  All warning offices

PURPOSE:  SD is a monthly documentation of severe, significant, and unusual weather events which took place within an NWSFO/NWSO’s warning area of responsibility.  SD is submitted to SPC, NCDC, and WSH and is used to compute official warning verification statistics for an office.

CHANGES:  No significant programmatic changes have taken place during the past year.

COMMENTS: While SD is viewed as the official climatological record of severe/unusual weather, much concern has been voiced regarding the damage totals contained in SD.  NWS staff who prepare SD as well as customers who utilize its information must understand that the damage figures are somewhat preliminary.
