SHORT TERM FORECAST |
REFERENCE: WSOM Chapters C-21, C-40 to C-44, accompanying OMLs/ROMLs/ Memos, NOAA Tech Memo NWS SR-164
ISSUED BY: All warning offices.
PURPOSE: The NOW is a product used to provide a 1- to 6-hour forecast of weather across an office’s CWFA. It should be used to describe the forecast movement of fronts, troughs, and areas of precipitation. It may inclcude a summary of current conditions across the area, but these should be referenced only in the context of the forecast movement.
CHANGES: No significant programmatic changes have taken place in the past year. The NOW should be utilized as an event-driven product describing non-benign weather in the office’s CWA.
COMMENTS: The NOW is the primary means for getting short-term weather information to our customers, replacing the SPS in this area. The flexibility of the product allows it to perform well in a variety of weather situations. In general, the NOW should be used for short-fuse, storm-scale events. SVSs should be used for very short-length reports of severe weather, while SPSs are to be utilized for hazardous weather outlooks.
