Length of Service awards

Length of Service awards are presented to individual Cooperative Observers at 5 year increments, beginning at the 10 year anniversary. Institutional awards are also presented to recognize the dedication of businesses and corporate groups, but only in 25 year increments. These awards are presented to recognize the observer for dedication to the program for the extended periods of time involved.

The Edward H. Stoll award is presented to observers who complete 50 years of service to the Cooperative Program. Mr Stoll, after whom the award is named, was a Cooperative Observer from Elwood, NE. He was presented his namesake award by President Carter soon after it’s creation in 1975. Mr Stoll went on to complete 76 years of service to the program.

The Helmut E. Landsberg award is presented to Cooperative Observers who reach their 60th anniversary with the program. Mr Landsberg was the Director of the National Weather Service Climatology Program before the position was abolished in 1973. To reach this milestone, an observer has to be a very special type of person.

The Albert J. Meyer award is presented to Cooperative Observers who attain 65 years of service to the National Weather Service and their country. Mr Meyer was a Cooperative Observer from Eagle Pass, TX, who went on to be appointed by President Grant to establish the “Division of Telegrams and Reports for the Benefit of Commerce” in 1870. This later became the National Weather Service.

The Ruby Stufft award is presented to any Cooperative Weather Observer who reached 70 years service to the program. Mrs Stufft was from Elsmere, NE, and was the first woman to reach that plateau. It is truely a dedicated individual who will remain with a program long enough to earn this award.

The Earl Stewart award was named fro Mr Earl Stewart from Cottage Grove, Oregon. Mr Stewart completed 75 years of service in 1992. Any observer reaching this milestone (75 years) is presented this extremely rare and prestegious award.
