Dawson (DOC) Campbell



Dawson (DOC) Campbell was presented the Thomas Jefferson award on October 10th at his home in the Gila Wilderness area of New Mexico. His home is near the Gila Hot Springs, approximately 45 miles north of Silver City. Doc has been an observer, along with his family, for nearly 40 years.

The award was presented by Charlie Liles, MIC of the Albuquerque National Weather Service Office. Several other NWS representative were in attendance to celebrate this prestigious award. Included in the group were: Max Blood, MIC of the El Paso office; Bob Cooper, DAPM of the El Paso office; Grady Svboda, DAPM of the Albuquerque office; and Mike Asmus of the Southern Region Headquarters. Several other members of the Albuquerque and El Paso offices were also in attendance.

Doc Campbell was one of the first people to settle in the Gila Wilderness in 1919. He and his new wife began a family ranch in 1920 and continue the operation to date. He credits his success and many accomplishments to his family and the support they have provided.
