...2012 Tsunami Awareness Week: March 25 to March 31...
A large amount of the population across the islands of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands live in or near the tsunami inundation area. But along with the enjoyment offered by coastal living and vacationing comes personal responsibility to prepare for unique hazards that exist in coastal areas...such as tsunamis.
This year the National Weather Service Forecast Office in San Juan, in coordination with the Puerto Rico Seismic Network and the Caribbean Tsunami Center have prepared an exercise called LANTEX12. The purpose of this exercise, which will begin on Wednesday March 28 at precisely 9:04 am AST, will be to assist the tsunami preparedness efforts throughout Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.
Your National Weather Service will participate in this exercise which will be kicked off by the issuance of a test Tsunami Exercise message by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. This center has joint responsibility...along with the Puerto Rico Seismic Network...for all tsunami warnings...watches...advisories and information bulletins that are issued for Puerto rico and U.S. Virgin islands.
In the event of a real tsunami the exercise will be discontinued and actual messages will be relayed through the usual channels.
This is a great opportunity for your community to join the TsunamiReady program. The TsunamiReady program has helped community leaders and emergency managers strengthen their local operations. Tsunami ready communities are better prepared to save lives through better planning, education and awareness. Communities have fewer fatalities and property damage if they plan before a Tsunami arrives. No community is tsunami proof, but TsunamiReady Can help minimize loss to your community.
