...BENEFICIAL RAINS FELL ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING JUNE...

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE JUNE 1999...MONTHLY RAINFALL WAS ABOVE AVERAGE 
THROUGHOUT WEST CENTRAL TEXAS.  JUNE BEGAN WITH A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN 
THE WEATHER PATTERN...RESULTING IN COOLER AND WETTER CONDITIONS. BENEFICIAL
RAIN FELL ON NUMEROUS DAYS DURING THE MONTH AS A MOIST...TROPICAL LIKE
AIRMASS RESIDED OVER THE REGION. 

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...TOTAL RAINFALL FOR JUNE WAS 5.48 INCHES. THIS 
WAS 2.62 INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY  NORMAL OF 2.86 INCHES. AT SAN ANGELO 
REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE JUNE RAINFALL TOTAL WAS 3.44 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.11 
INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.33 INCHES. JUNCTION RECORDED A MONTHLY 
TOTAL RAINFALL OF 6.24 INCHES. 

IN ADDITION TO MORE FREQUENT RAINFALL...THE PRESENCE OF MORE  CLOUDCOVER ON A 
NUMBER OF DAYS HELPED TO HOLD TEMPERATURES DOWN.  AT ABILENE...THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE FOR JUNE WAS 78.3 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.9 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL
AVERAGE OF 80.2 DEGREES. IN SAN ANGELO...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JUNE WAS
80.1 DEGREES. THIS WAS SIX TENTHS OF A DEGREE ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE OF 79.5
DEGREES. AT BOTH ABILENE AND SAN ANGELO...THE TEMPERATURE NEVER REACHED 100
DEGREES DURING THE MONTH. 

JUNE 2000 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

ALTHOUGH NO SEVERE WEATHER WAS REPORTED DURING JUNE...LOCALIZED VERY HEAVY
RAIN BROUGHT FLOODING TO SOME LOCATIONS ON A FEW DAYS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT 
FLOODING OCCURRED IN BROWNWOOD...AND IN  SCHLEICHER COUNTY NEAR ELDORADO. 

IN BROWNWOOD...6 INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN JUST A TWO HOUR PERIOD DURING THE
PREDAWN HOURS OF THE 15TH. THIS CAUSED RESIDENTIAL AND STREET FLOODING...AND 
A NUMBER OF HOMES HAD TO BE EVACUATED.  

IN SCHLEICHER COUNTY...SLOW MOVING THUNDERSTORMS WITH VERY HEAVY RAIN 
DEVELOPED ON THE LATE EVENING OF THE 17TH...AND CONTINUED INTO THE MORNING OF 
THE 18TH. THE HEAVIEST RAIN...10 TO 12 INCHES... FELL JUST SOUTHWEST OF 
ELDORADO. NUMEROUS ROADS WERE FLOODED IN SCHLEICHER COUNTY...AS WELL AS A CITY
PARK IN ELDORADO. 

DURING THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF THE MONTH...5 TO 7 INCHES OF RAIN FELL AT SOME 
LOCATIONS ACROSS COLEMAN AND MCCULLOCH COUNTIES...AND THIS CAUSED FLOODING IN 
THE TOWNS OF COLEMAN AND MELVIN. SEVERAL HOMES WERE FLOODED IN COLEMAN. 

SLOW MOVING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN OCCURRED OVER THE BIG 
COUNTRY DURING THE LAST FEW DAYS OF THE MONTH. SOME LOCATIONS RECEIVED AMOUNTS
RANGING FROM 2 TO 6 INCHES. THE HEAVY CAUSED THE CALIFORNIA CREEK AT STAMFORD 
TO RISE TO NEAR BANKFULL...AND SOME HOMES WERE FLOODED IN THE MERKEL AREA.
