...TEMPERATURES AVERAGED NEAR NORMAL WHILE PRECIPITATION WAS 
BELOW NORMAL ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS IN JANUARY...

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JANUARY
WAS 44.4 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.9 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 43.5 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR JANUARY WAS
JUST 0.18 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.79 INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 
0.97 INCHES. ABILENE RECEIVED NO SNOWFALL DURING JANUARY. 

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR 
JANUARY WAS 45.9 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.0 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 44.9 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR 
JANUARY WAS 0.33 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.49 INCHES BELOW THE 
MONTHLY NORMAL OF 0.82 INCHES. NO SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED IN
SAN ANGELO IN JANUARY.


JANUARY 2003 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

STRONG GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS OCCURRED ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS 
ON NEW YEARS DAY...AS A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DEPARTED THE 
SOUTHERN PLAINS. A PEAK WIND GUST OF 48 MPH WAS RECORDED IN 
ABILENE...WITH 44 MPH IN SAN ANGELO...AND 37 MPH AT JUNCTION. 

A DRY WEATHER PATTERN WITH MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES AND ABOVE NORMAL
TEMPERATURES OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS DAYS DURING JANUARY...AS A 
SERIES OF HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMS MOVED INTO THE SOUTHERN PLAINS 
AND TEXAS. 

ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURES AVERAGED ABOVE NORMAL...ABRUPT CHANGES TO 
MUCH COLDER CONDITIONS OCCURRED WHEN A FEW STRONG COLD FRONTS 
PUSHED SOUTH ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS (ON THE 9TH...LATE ON THE 
15TH AND EARLY ON THE 16TH...AND ON THE 21ST). THE COLD AIR 
RESIDED OVER THE REGION FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER EACH OF THESE 
FRONTAL PASSAGES.  

ONLY ONE WEATHER SYSTEM BROUGHT RAINFALL TO THE REGION. AN UPPER 
LEVEL DISTURBANCE BROUGHT SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS TO WEST 
CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 12TH. RAINFALL AMOUNTS GENERALLY RANGED 
UNDER ONE HALF INCH. 

NO RECORD HIGH OR LOW TEMPERATURES WERE SET IN JANUARY.
