PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN ANGELO TX

...NO MEASURABLE RAINFALL WAS RECORDED IN SAN ANGELO DURING THE MONTH
OF APRIL...IT WAS THE DRIEST APRIL IN 78 YEARS...

THROUGH THE ENTIRE MONTH OF APRIL...ONLY A TRACE OF RAINFALL WAS
REPORTED AT MATHIS FIELD IN SAN ANGELO...RESULTING IN A TIE WITH
1873...1892...AND 1918 FOR THE SECOND DRIEST APRIL ON RECORD. THE
DRIEST APRIL ON RECORD OCCURRED IN 1920...WHEN NO RAIN FELL FOR THE
WHILE MONTH. BEFORE THIS YEAR...THE MOST RECENT EXTREMELY DRY APRIL
OCCURRED IN 1986 WHEN 0.07 INCH OF RAIN WAS RECORDED.

NEARLY ALL OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS WAS MUCH DRIER THAN NORMAL FOR
APRIL. ABILENE ONLY RECEIVED 0.35 INCH OF RAINFALL FOR THE 8TH DRIEST
APRIL ON RECORD...WITH ALL OF THIS RAIN FALLING ON THE 26TH. JUNCTION
RECEIVED 0.87 INCH OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH...BUT ALL OF THIS RAIN FELL
ON THE 8TH.

THE GENERAL WEATHER PATTERN FOR THE MONTH WAS UNFAVORABLE FOR
PRODUCING SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL FOR WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. ALTHOUGH THE
SOUTHERN BRANCH OF THE JET STREAM WAS STRONG FOR MUCH OF THE
MONTH...THE WEATHER SYSTEMS MOVING THROUGH THIS JET STREAM WERE
MOVING TOO FAST TO GATHER SUFFICIENT MOISTURE FOR PRODUCING RAIN IN
WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. SEVERAL DRYLINES AND COLD FRONTS PASSED THROUGH
THE REGION DURING THE MONTH...BUT WITH DRY WEST AND NORTHWEST WINDS
ALOFT...LITTLE OR NO RAIN WAS ABLE TO DEVELOP ALONG THE DRYLINES OR
FRONTS UNTIL THEY REACHED CENTRAL OR SOUTH TEXAS. AFTER THESE
FREQUENT FRONTAL PASSAGES...THE MOISTURE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO
WOULD BECOME CUT OFF...RESULTING IN SUNNY DAYS AND CLEAR NIGHTS FOR
MOST OF THE MONTH FOR WEST CENTRAL TEXAS.

HOWEVER...AN EXTREMELY DRY APRIL DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THE
REMAINDER OF THE SPRING SEASON WILL BE DRY. THE TABLE BELOW LISTS THE
TEN DRIEST APRILS IN SAN ANGELO AND ABILENE...NOT INCLUDING 1998...
FOLLOWED BY THE MAY AND JUNE RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THOSE YEARS.
