NWR
Distribution to Public Schools
In
a joint effort, the Department’s of Education,
Commerce, and Homeland Security procured a mass
purchase of 97,000 for all public schools cross
the country earlier this year with shipment
taking place in September. Preparation and early
notification are key to keeping children safe
while in school. Whether it is fire, tornado
terrorism, hurricane or other type of incident,
the more prepared a school is, the safer the
children will be.
In
addition to preparation through drills and exercises,
having immediate access to alerts and warnings
systems will allow people to respond quickly
and appropriately should an incident develop.
NOAA
Weather Radios serve as All Hazard Radios to
the public with the capability to transmit all
alerts to a specific city or region, or nationwide
depending on the circumstance.
Partners
Working Together
In June NWS Shreveport staff members met with
twelve members of our community to the form
the first “Partners Working Together”
focus group, in order to help improve products
and services issued by the National Weather
Service of Shreveport Louisiana. Participants
of the customer focus group include a wide spectrum
of backgrounds including Aviation, Emergency
management, Water Management, Media (TV and
radio), Agriculture, Utilities, Transportation,
and Forest Management.
This
forum will provide constructive feedback through
close review of NWS products and services. Their
mission is to help create a process for continual
improvement of the NWS Shreveport office.
The
forum has already provided abundant suggestions
including web based products, methods of communicating
information, and timing of notification of warnings
and statements.
NWS
Weather Lesson Modules
In an effort to help promote environmental literacy
for grade school students, NWS Shreveport has
developed weather lesson modules for science
teachers across the Arklatex.
Building
on the success of the Jetstream website (http://www.srh.weather.gov/srh/jetstream)
from NWS Southern Region Headquarters, staff
at NWS Shreveport incorporated weather information
from the Jetstream website and developed it
into specific lesson modules. Furthermore, the
lessons are correlated to the Louisiana comprehensive
curriculum for grades 4 through 12 by grade
and unit of science. This coupled with activity
sheets, power point presentation, teacher’s
guide, and test/answer key, provides a complete
lesson module for science teachers.
Topics
already developed include The Atmosphere, Weather
Forecasting, and Components of Thunderstorms.
The Oceans and Tropical Weather will be available
in the near future. Eventually the lesson modules
will be correlated to Texas grade standards
and available on the web for download by teachers.
