THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONORED BILLY JOE METTEAUR OF CHIRENO, TEXAS FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIELD OF METEOROLOGY AS A VOLUNTEER WEATHER OBSERVER FOR THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE IN SHREVEPORT, LA FOR OVER 30 YEARS ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PRESENTED THE JOHN CAMPANIUS HOLM AWARD, WHICH IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST AWARD THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PRESENTS TO VOLUNTEER OBSERVERS; NO MORE THAN 25 HOLM AWARDS ARE GIVEN ANNUALLY. THE AWARD WAS CREATED IN 1959 AS A WAY FOR THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TO HONOR COOPERATIVE WEATHER OBSERVERS FOR OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE FIELD OF METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS.

MR. METTEAUR HAS AN OFFICIAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STATION LOCATED AT HIS HOME WHICH CONSISTS OF A U.S STANDARD RAIN GAUGE. REPORTS OF THE PRECIPITATION ARE TELEPHONED INTO A TOUCH TONE COMPUTER SYSTEM AT THE SHREVEPORT WEATHER OFFICE DAILY, WHILE A SUMMARY OF DAILY OBSERVATIONS ARE SENT TO SHREVEPORT OFFICE EACH MONTH. THERE THE DATA IS PROCESSED AND SENT ON TO THE NATIONAL CLIMATIC CENTER IN ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA WHERE IT IS COMPUTER PROCESSED, ARCHIVED AND PUBLISHED IN THE TEXAS CLIMATIC DATA PUBLICATION FOR CHIRENO.

Mr. Metteaur is displaying his awards with the help of the Shreveport staff and friends. Mr. Metteaur received an official certificate of recognition with the state seal from Texas Governor Rick Perry, a flag of Texas along with a certificate of congratulatory from Texas State Senator Todd Staples and Texas State Representative Jim McReynolds, and a congratulatory resolution and letter from Texas U.S. Representative Jim Turner and from Texas State Representative Wayne Christian.
