Kellum
awarded the Holm Award |
The
National Weather Service (NWS) honored Thomas and Maybell Kellum
of Alto, TX, on Wednesday November 20, 2002, for their outstanding
contribution to the field of meteorology as a volunteer weather
observer for the NWS in Shreveport for over 33 years. The NWS
presented the Holm Award, which is one of the highest award the
NWS presents to volunteer observers. No more than 25 Holm Awards
are given annually. The award was created in 1959 as a way for
the NWS to honor observers for outstanding achievements in the
field of meteorological observation.

The Kellums
record river and rainfall data for the Alto, TX, area. They provide
a written record each month to the Shreveport Forecast Office,
then the data is sent to the National Climatic Data Center in
Asheville, NC, where the data are archived and published. In addition,
when precipitation or flooding does occur, they report the amount
of precipitation or flooding via phone to a computer in the Shreveport
Forecast Office. That report is then relayed to the forecasters,
the River Forecast Office, and the U.S. Corps of Engineers for
use in flash flood forecasting and flood control planning.

The
Kellums are displaying their awards with the help of the
Shreveport staff. The Kellums received an official certificate
of recognition with the state seal from Texas Governor
Rick Perry, a Texas state flag, along with a certificate
of congratulatory and a congratulatory letter from Texas
State Senator Todd Staples, a congratulatory certificate
from Lieutenant Governor of Texas, Bill Ratliff, and congratulatory
certificate from Texas State Representative, Chuck Hopson,
and two personalized windbreakers from the Southern Region
Headquarters of the National Weather Service in Fort Worth,
Texas.
