...RECORD RAINS IN PARTS OF THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY DESERT...

A TOTAL OF 1.15 INCH OF PRECIPITATION FELL AT THE CO-OP WEATHER
STATION AT IRON MOUNTAIN, CALIFORNIA FOR THE 24 HOUR PERIOD ENDING
AT 720 AM TODAY. THIS PUSHED THE AUGUST MONTHLY PRECIPITATION TOTAL
TO 3.75 INCHES, WHICH SETS AN ALL-TIME RECORD FOR AUGUST. THE
PREVIOUS WETTEST AUGUST RECORD WAS 2.31 INCHES IN 2008. THE NORMAL
AUGUST PRECIPITATION AT IRON MOUNTAIN IS 0.42 INCH. THIS ALSO RANKS
AS THE SECOND WETTEST MONTH EVER AT IRON MOUNTAIN. THE ALL-TIME
RECORD IS 6.97 INCHES SET IN SEPTEMBER 1939, NOTED FOR THE HIGH
AMOUNT OF RAINFALL FROM REMNANT TROPICAL SYSTEMS THAT MOVED ACROSS
THE SOCAL DESERTS. THE THIRD WETTEST MONTH EVER WAS 3.18 INCHES IN
MARCH 1992. RECORDS FOR IRON MOUNTAIN DATE BACK TO JANUARY 1935.

THE TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE CALENDAR DATE OF AUGUST 12, 2014 FOR
NEEDLES, CALIFORNIA WAS ESTIMATED AT 2.20 INCHES DUE TO A
COMMUNICATIONS FAILURE WITH THE AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION AT THE
NEEDLES AIRPORT. A TOTAL OF 1.81 INCHES FELL BETWEEN 828 PM ON
AUGUST 12TH AND 1259 AM PDT ON AUGUST 13TH, HOWEVER AT LEAST 2
ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS WERE SHOWN MOVING ACROSS THE NEEDLES
AIRPORT ON RADAR EARLIER THAT EVENING DURING THE TIME THE
COMMUNICATIONS ISSUE TOOK PLACE. BASED ON A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE
OFF RADAR AND NEARBY OBSERVATIONS, THE FINAL DAILY TOTAL IS 2.20
INCHES. THIS BREAKS THE OLD DAILY RECORD FOR AUGUST 12TH OF 1.87
INCH SET IN 1906. THIS ALSO TIES WITH AUGUST 10, 1918 AS THE 4TH
WETTEST DAY EVER ON RECORD AT NEEDLES FOR ANY MONTH. ONLY AUGUST 19,
1906 WITH 3.49 INCHES, SEPTEMBER 6, 1939 WITH 2.94 INCHES AND AUGUST
28, 1951 WITH 2.55 INCHES RANK AS WETTER DATES. RECORDS FOR NEEDLES
DATE BACK TO 1888.

THE ABOVE INFORMATION IS PRELIMINARY AND IS SUBJECT TO A FINAL
REVIEW BEFORE BEING CERTIFIED BY THE NATIONAL CLIMATIC DATA CENTER.
