...PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF STORM DAMAGE IN THE AREA OF GROOM CREEK...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN FLAGSTAFF CONDUCTED A DAMAGE SURVEY
SOUTHEAST OF THE CITY OF PRESCOTT FOR THE SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 27TH
STORMS. THE LIKELY CAUSE OF THE OBSERVED DAMAGE WAS AN EF-0 TO EF-1
TORNADO.

EVENT DATE: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2014.

EVENT TIME: 1:55 TO 2:05 PM MST.

EVENT LOCATION:
TWO AREAS OF TORNADO DAMAGE WERE OBSERVED. ONE AREA OF STORM DAMAGE
WAS ABOUT 6 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE CITY OF PRESCOTT, EAST OF SENATOR
HIGHWAY NEAR GROOM CREEK. A SECOND AREA OF DAMAGE WAS LOCATED
APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES SOUTH SOUTHWEST OF GROOM CREEK ALONG SENATOR
HIGHWAY. THE AREA BETWEEN THESE LOCATIONS COULD NOT BE SURVEYED FROM
THE GROUND. AN OVERFLIGHT OF THE TORNADO PATH IS STILL IN THE
PLANNING PHASE.

EVENT CAUSE:
TORNADO PRODUCED OBSERVED DAMAGE
APPROXIMATE PATH LENGTH: OVER 2 MILES
APPROXIMATE PATH WIDTH: 0.4 MILES
MAXIMUM DAMAGE OBSERVED EF-1 (86-110 MPH)
HOUSEHOLD DAMAGE EF-0 TO EF-1
TREE DAMAGE (UPROOTED AND SNAPPED) EF-1

DAMAGE DESCRIPTION:
NUMEROUS PONDEROSA PINE TREES SNAPPED WITH SOME TREES UPROOTED. SOME
HOME DAMAGE TO SIDING AND ROOF MATERIAL...AS WELL AS DAMAGE FROM
TREES FALLING ONTO HOMES. THREE HOMES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED AND
UNINHABITABLE.
