A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SURVEY TEAM INVESTIGATED AN AREA OF
DAMAGE AT THE HENRY COUNTY AIRPORT IN HAMPTON CAUSED BY A
THUNDERSTORM THAT OCCURRED AROUND 545 PM EDT ON THE EVENING OF
SEPTEMBER 7TH. THE TEAM DETERMINED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS A RESULT OF
STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS FROM A DOWNBURST. WINDS WERE ESTIMATED
BETWEEN 70 AND 80 MPH. SIX PLANES WERE DESTROYED WHEN THEY WERE
PULLED FROM THEIR TIE-DOWNS AND FLIPPED...WHILE 15 OTHER PLANES
RECEIVED MINOR DAMAGE. OTHER DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO MINOR
ROOFING...FASCIA...AND GARAGE DOOR DAMAGE TO A FEW AIRPLANE
STORAGE FACILITIES.
