SUBJECT:   CHANGE TO GAGE ZERO DATUM...FLOOD STAGE...AND FLOOD
           CATEGORIES FOR THE RIVER GAGE ON THE MALHEUR RIVER
           AT VALE OREGON /VALO3/

EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 7 2015...THE GAGE ZERO DATUM AT THE U.S.
GEOLOGICAL /USGS/ STREAMGAGE ON THE MALHEUR RIVER AT VALE WILL BE
CHANGED BY 10 FEET. GAGE ZERO DATUM IS THE HORIZONTAL SURFACE USED
AS THE ZERO POINT FOR MEASUREMENT OF RIVER STAGE...ALSO REFERRED TO
AS GAGE HEIGHT.

BACKGROUND
THE CHANNEL DOWNSTREAM OF THE GAGE WAS RECENTLY ALTERED
NECESSITATING THE VERTICAL GAGE DATUM BE LOWERED TO AVOID NEGATIVE
GAGE HEIGHTS.

THE USGS WILL BE ADJUSTING THE ZERO DATUM USED TO REFERENCE GAGE
HEIGHTS...FLOOD STAGE...AND FLOOD CATEGORIES. THE HEIGHT WILL CHANGE
BY 10.00 FEET...EFFECTIVELY LOWERING THE GAGE DATUM.

IMPACTS TO USERS
THE EXISTING FLOOD STAGE AND FLOOD CATEGORIES FOR THE MALHEUR RIVER
AT VALE /VALO3/ WILL BE INCREASED BY 10.00 FEET. NEW FLOOD STAGE AND
CATEGORIES WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:

      FLOOD STAGE      OLD 9.5 FEET     NEW 19.5 FEET
      MODERATE FLOOD   OLD 11.0 FEET    NEW 21.0 FEET
      MAJOR FLOOD      OLD 13.0 FEET    NEW 23.0 FEET

THESE CHANGES HAVE BEEN COORDINATED THROUGH THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL
SURVEY...AND OREGON WATER RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.
