...WACO CLIMATE NARRATIVE FOR DECEMBER 2014...

MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURES ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL TEXAS WERE
ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER BUT WE DID HAVE A FEW COLD
SNAPS. THERE WAS SOME LIGHT SNOW...GENERALLY A TRACE TO NEARLY AN
INCH...NORTH OF A LINE FROM BRECKENRIDGE TO BOWIE ON DECEMBER 27TH.
FREEZING RAIN...AND A LITTLE SLEET...FELL MAINLY WEST OF I-35 ON THE
LAST DAY OF THE MONTH BUT AMOUNTS WERE LIGHT.

ALTHOUGH IT WAS A CLOUDY DECEMBER...RAINFALL WAS GENERALLY LIGHTER
THAN NORMAL WITH MOST LOCATIONS RECEIVING LESS THAN THREE-QUARTERS
THEIR NORMAL MONTHLY RAINFALL. MANY AREAS RECEIVED LESS THAN HALF OF
THEIR MONTHLY NORMALS.

SOME WEATHER EVENTS OF INTEREST ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL TEXAS
DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER...
DENSE FOG BLANKETED THE AREA SOUTH OF I-20 AND WEST OF I-35
DECEMBER 4TH.  DENSE FOG ALSO COVERED MOST OF NORTH AND CENTRAL
TEXAS DURING THE MORNINGS OF DECEMBER 9TH AND 10TH.

FOR WACO...THERE WAS PRECIPITATION RECORDED ON 16 DAYS OUT OF THE 31
DAYS OF THE MONTH OF DECEMBER WHICH TIES FOR THE SIXTH GREATEST
NUMBER OF DECEMBER PRECIPITATION DAYS ON RECORD. HOWEVER...6 OF
THOSE DAYS ONLY HAD A TRACE. TOTAL RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS A
MEAGER 0.54 INCHES WHICH WAS ONLY 20 PERCENT OF THE NORMAL 2.75
INCHES. THIS BROUGHT THE ANNUAL TOTAL TO 30.09 INCHES WHICH
IS 4.60 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. WACO HAS RECIEVED ABOUT 83 PERCENT OF
ITS NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS (JANUARY 1ST 2010
THROUGH DECEMBER 31ST 2014).

MUCH OF CENTRAL TEXAS REMAINS IN MODERATE TO SEVERE DROUGHT
/D1 TO D2 IN THE DROUGHT INDEX/. HOWEVER...AREAS SOUTHEAST OF A
KILLEEN TO CORSICANA TO CANTON LINE ARE IN THE ABNORMALLY
DRY CATEGORY /D0/. PARTS OF ROBERTSON...LEON AND SOUTHEASTERN
ANDERSON COUNTIES ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE IN ANY OF THE DROUGHT
CATEGORIES WHEREAS AREAS FROM RANGER TO HICO TO NORTH OF ITASCA
TO ENNIS ARE IN THE EXTREME TO EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT /D3 AND D4/.

WACO - DECEMBER DAYS WITH RAINFALL

AT WACO...THE WARMER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURE TREND CONTINUED IN
DECEMBER. THE AVERAGE HIGH WAS 59.3 DEGREES (0.3 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL) AND THE AVERAGE LOW WAS 42.6 (5.1 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL).
THIS MADE FOR AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 51.0 DEGREES
(2.7 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL). THE CLOUD COVER HELPED TO KEEP THE LOWS
MUCH WARMER THAN NORMAL. THE DECEMBER AVERAGE LOW OF 42.6 DEGREES IS
THE 15TH WARMEST AVERAGE LOW SINCE RECORDS STARTED IN 1901.

THERE WERE ONLY 4 FREEZE DAYS IN DECEMBER 2014...WHICH IS LESS THAN
HALF  OF THE AVERAGE OF ABOUT 10 DAYS. THIS STANDS IN CONTRAST WITH
DECEMBER 2013 WHEN WE HAD 23 DAYS. THERE HAVE BEEN AS FEW AS ZERO
FREEZE DAYS IN 1907 AND AS MANY AS 25 IN 1909. LAST DECEMBER HAD THE
SECOND HIGHEST NUMBER OF FREEZE DAYS.
