...WARMER AND WETTER DECEMBER FOR SAINT PAUL ALASKA...

DECEMBER 2014 WAS A WARMER THAN NORMAL MONTH FOR ST PAUL WITH MOST DAYS IN AT
RECORD OR NEAR RECORD VALUES. IT BEGAN WITH A SERIES OF TROUGHS AND FRONTS THAT
BROUGHT SOUTHERLY WINDS AND A RECORD MAX AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH. A LOW
PRESSURE MID MONTH BROUGHT A STRONG FRONT THROUGH WHICH GAVE ST PAUL ITS ONLY
PRECIPITATION RECORD OF THE MONTH. A BROAD LOW TOWARDS THE END OF THE MONTH BROUGHT
A SOUTHERLY FLOW...GIVING ST PAUL TWO MORE TIED MAXIMUM RECORDS.

WITH RESPECT TO TEMPERATURES...THE AVERAGE DAILY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS THE FOURTH
WARMEST...THE AVERAGE DAILY MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS THE FIFTH WARMEST ON
RECORD...AND THE AVERAGE MEAN DAILY TEMPERATURE WAS FOURTH WARMEST ON RECORD.

EVEN WITH THESE WARMER AVERAGES...ONLY THREE MAXIMUM RECORDS WERE SET...TWO OF
WHICH WERE TIES. A NEW HIGH MAXIMUM WAS SET ON THE 1ST WITH 42...SUPPLANTING THE
OLD RECORD OF 41 SET IN 2002. TWO CONSECUTIVE HIGH MAXIMUM DAYS OF 41 ON THE 26TH
AND 27TH WERE SET...TYING THE RECORDS SET IN 1951 AND 1984 RESPECTIVELY.

DECEMBER 2014 WAS WETTER THAN NORMAL...WITH THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION RANKING AS
THE THIRTEENTH WETTEST ON RECORD. SNOWFALL HOWEVER WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN THE
AVERAGE 12.1 INCHES FOR THE MONTH. 4.3 INCHES WAS THE NINTH LOWEST MONTHLY SNOWFALL
FOR SAINT PAUL ISLAND.
