SEPTEMBER 2014 FEATURED A BROAD SPECTRUM OF WEATHER FOR THE MEDFORD
AREA. THE FIRST THREE WEEKS WERE SIMILAR TO SUMMER, WITH DRY
CONDITIONS SAVE FOR A FEW TRACE EVENTS, AND TEMPERATURES MOSTLY
ABOVE NORMAL. IN FACT, MEDFORD SAW 16 DAYS WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES
OVER 90 DEGREES WITH THE WARMEST DAY REACHING 100 DEGREES ON THE
20TH. AS A RESULT, THIS WAS THE 2ND WARMEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD WITH
AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 71.4 DEGREES, JUST 0.4 DEGREES BELOW THE
RECORD OF 71.8 DEGREES SET IN 2011. IN ADDITION THE AVERAGE MINIMUM
TEMPERATURE IN SEPTEMBER WAS 54.4 DEGREES, WHICH BROKE THE RECORD OF
53.8 DEGREES, SET IN BOTH 2013 AND 2011. THE WARM CONDITIONS ENDED
WITH AN ATMOSPHERIC RIVER EVENT BEGINNING ON THE 24TH THAT BROUGHT
MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION TO THE ENTIRE COUNTY WARNING AREA, REDUCING
MANY AREA FIRES TO MOSTLY SMOLDERING. 2.02 INCHES OF RAIN WERE
RECORDED AT THE ROGUE VALLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN MEDFORD ON THE
24TH, THE HIGHEST ONE DAY RAINFALL TOTAL THIS YEAR. A COOLING TREND
OCCURRED BEHIND THE COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS EVENT, BRINGING
BELOW NORMAL TO NORMAL TEMPERATURES TO MEDFORD THE LAST WEEK OF
SEPTEMBER.
