...WARM AND WET DECEMBER FOR BETHEL...

AS HAS BEEN THE TREND RECENTLY...DECEMBER CLOSED OUT 2014 AS A
WARM AND WET MONTH. AT THE UPPER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE...
A STRONG RIDGE STAYED IN PLACE FROM THE EASTERN INTERIOR OF ALASKA
SOUTHEASTWARD OVER SOUTHEAST ALASKA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA. THIS
ALLOWED AN BROAD TROUGH TO FORM OVER THE BERING SEA WITH THE MAIN
JET STREAM WELL TO THE SOUTH OF ALASKA AND THE NORTH PACIFIC. IN THIS
BROAD TROUGH...THE ALEUTIAN LOW SETTLED IN OVER THE EASTERN BERING SEA
AND BRISTOL BAY ALLOWING FOR WARM MOIST AIR TO FLOW INTO SOUTHWESTERN
ALASKA.

LOOKING AT TEMPERATURES...DECEMBER 2014 WAS YET AGAIN IN THE TOP
TEN DECEMBERS ON RECORD IN ALL MEASURES OF TEMPERATURE. THE MEAN HIGH
TEMPERATURE WAS THE 8TH WARMEST ON RECORD...THE MEAN MINIMUM AND MEAN
DAILY AVERAGE WERE BOTH THE 6TH WARMEST ON RECORD. DECEMBER 21ST SET
A RECORD FOR THE LATEST DATE THAT BETHEL HAS HAD A MINIMUM TEMPERATURE
BELOW ZERO. IT WAS ALSO THE SECOND LONGEST NUMBER OF DAYS IN BETWEEN
BELOW ZERO TEMPERATURES /272 DAYS/. FINALLY...THREE DAILY TEMPERATURE
RECORDS WERE SET IN THE MONTH...ALL HIGH DAILY MINIMUM TEMPERATURES:

DATE NEW RECORD PREVIOUS RECORD
12/28 33 32 IN 1967
12/29 36 34 IN 1941
12/30 33 32 IN 1985

ALTHOUGH PRECIPITATION WAS ABOVE NORMAL FOR DECEMBER BY ALMOST HALF
OF AN INCH...IT WAS NOT A TOP TEN MONTH WITH THE PRECIPITATION TOTAL
COMING AT THE 15TH WETTEST ON RECORD. SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS HALF
OF THE NORMAL RECEIVED IN DECEMBER AND RANKED AS THE 32ND LOWEST SNOW
TOTAL ON RECORD. DUE TO THE ABNORMALLY WARM CONDITIONS...MOST OF THE
PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH FELL AS RAIN WITH NEARLY HALF OF THE MONTHLY
PRECIPITATION TOTALS FALLING ON THE 1ST AND THE 28TH.
