INCLUDING THE BEACHES OF...NORTHPORT...FRANKFORT...MANISTEE
1106 AM EDT MON JUL 28 2014

...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 5 PM EDT THIS
AFTERNOON...

* HIGH WAVE ACTION... STRONG CURRENTS AND DANGEROUS SWIMMING
  CONDITIONS EXPECTED.

* RIP CURRENTS...POSSIBLE.

* LOCATION...BEACHES FROM GRAND TRAVERSE LIGHT SOUTH TO MANISTEE.

* OVERVIEW/POTENTIAL IMPACTS...NORTH WINDS WILL FREQUENTLY GUST
  TO 25 KNOTS THROUGH MID AFTERNOON. THAT MAY ALLOW RIP CURRENTS
  TO DEVELOP ALONG NORTH-FACING BEACHES...AND LONGSHORE CURRENTS
  ELSEWHERE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

HIGH WAVE ACTION MAKES SWIMMING DIFFICULT AND CAN TIRE EVEN A
STRONG SWIMMER QUICKLY.

STRUCTURAL CURRENTS FORM ALONG PIERS WHERE LONGSHORE CURRENTS AND
WAVE ACTION FLOW INTO THE STRUCTURE. STRUCTURAL CURRENTS CAN
SWEEP YOU OUT INTO DEEPER WATER ALONG THE PIER STRUCTURE.

A LONGSHORE CURRENT IS A LAKE CURRENT THAT MOVES PARALLEL TO
SHORE. LONGSHORE CURRENTS CAN BE STRONG ENOUGH TO PREVENT
SWIMMERS FROM BEING ABLE TO KEEP THEIR FEET ON THE BOTTOM...
MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO RETURN TO SHORE.

CHANNEL CURRENTS ARE STRONG CURRENTS THAT MOVE PARALLEL TO SHORE
IN BETWEEN THE BEACH AND AN OFFSHORE FEATURE SUCH AS A SET OF
ROCKS OR AN ISLAND. IF WALKING ALONG A SANDBAR OUT TO THE ISLAND
OR ROCKS... THE CURRENT CAN SWEEP YOU INTO DEEPER WATER.

OUTLET CURRENTS ARE POWERFUL CHANNELS OF WATER FLOWING FROM RIVER
MOUTHS OR OTHER OUTLETS INTO THE LAKE. NEVER SWIM NEAR RIVER
MOUTHS OR OTHER OUTLETS AS THE CURRENT CAN SWEEP YOU INTO DEEPER
WATER.

RIP CURRENTS ARE POWERFUL CHANNELS OF WATER FLOWING QUICKLY AWAY
FROM SHORE...WHICH OCCUR MOST OFTEN AT LOW SPOTS OR BREAKS IN
SANDBARS. RIP CURRENTS CAN SWEEP YOU INTO DEEPER WATER.
