PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
142 PM CDT FRI OCT 3 2014

...WIDESPREAD THUNDERSTORM WIND DAMAGE ON THURSDAY...

NORTH AND CENTRAL TEXAS WAS HIT BY A LARGE SQUALL LINE
YESTERDAY WHICH CAUSED NUMEROUS AREAS OF DAMAGE. A PRELIMINARY
COUNT OF SEVERE WEATHER REPORTS GIVES US 47 HAIL REPORTS...AND 92
SEVERE WIND REPORTS. OF THE WIND REPORTS...WE HAVE 67 DIFFERENT
REPORTS OF THUNDERSTORM WIND DAMAGE AND 25 DIRECT OBSERVATIONS OF
WIND GUSTS OVER 58 MPH.

WHILE THERE WERE UNCONFIRMED REPORTS OF TORNADOES YESTERDAY...ALL
THE AVAILABLE EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT THE WIND DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY
STRAIGHT LINE THUNDERSTORM WINDS AND NOT BY TORNADOES. NO MATTER
THE CAUSE...THERE ARE NUMEROUS AREAS HAVING TO CLEAN UP
THUNDERSTORM DAMAGE TODAY.

LOOKING THROUGH THE DAMAGE EVIDENCE AND ALL AVAILABLE RADAR
DATA...WE HAVE MADE THE PRELIMINARY FINDINGS ON THE WIND SPEEDS FOR
THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

TARRANT COUNTY...DAMAGE OCCURRED IN FORT WORTH AND IN ARLINGTON.
WIND SPEEDS IN FORT WORTH WERE LIKELY AROUND 80 MPH. IN
ARLINGTON...WIND SPEEDS WERE CLOSER TO 90 MPH NEAR THE UTA CAMPUS
AND AT ARLINGTON BAPTIST COLLEGE.

DALLAS COUNTY...DAMAGE OCCURRED IN SOUTHWESTERN DALLAS COUNTY WITH
WIND SPEEDS CLOSE TO 85 MPH. AREAS NEAR GARLAND AND LAKE RAY
HUBBARD WINDS WERE 70 TO 80 MPH. TERMINAL DOPPLER RADAR ANALYSIS
CONFIRM AN OBSERVATION OF NEAR 100 MPH WINDS AT THE TOP OF A
BROADCAST TOWER IN CEDAR HILL. RADAR DATA ALSO SUGGESTS HIGHER WINDS
AT 800 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND.

ROCKWALL AND KAUFMAN COUNTY...WIND SPEEDS WERE STRONGEST IN
ROCKWALL COUNTY NEAR FATE...WHERE OBSERVATIONS AND RADAR DATA
SUGGEST WIND SPEEDS OF 70 TO 80 MPH. WIND SPEEDS WERE CLOSE TO 80
MPH NEAR TERRELL.

WACO AND MCLENNAN COUNTY...NUMEROUS REPORTS OF TREE DAMAGE...ROOF
DAMAGE...AND BLOWN OVER TRUCKS WERE RECEIVED. WIND SPEEDS WERE
LIKELY IN THE 65 TO 75 MPH RANGE.

TEMPLE AND BELL COUNTY...NUMEROUS REPORTS OF TREE AND STRUCTURE
DAMAGE WERE CAUSED BY WINDS IN THE 60 TO 65 MPH RANGE.
