Top 10 Oklahoma Snowstorms

The worst snowstorm ever recorded in Oklahoma was the blizzard that paralyzed parts of northwest Oklahoma on February 21-27, 1971. That storm dumped a state-record total of 36 inches in Buffalo, in Harper County. Winds of 30 to 50 mph whipped the snow into drifts up to 20 feet high.

Based upon records dating back to 1951, the table below lists the top 10 snowstorms in Oklahoma.

1. Feb. 21-22, 1971 Highest Snowfall Total: 36 inches in Buffalo. Snowfall totals of 8 inches or more were recorded from the eastern Oklahoma Panhandle into north central Oklahoma.
2. Nov. 25, 1992 Highest Snowfall Total: 22 inches in Laverne. Heavy snow was confined to a small portion of extreme northwestern Oklahoma.
3. Mar 16, 1970 Highest Snowfall Total: 20 inches in Bartlesville. Amounts of a foot or more were reported along the Kansas border in extreme north central and northeast Oklahoma.
4. Mar. 13, 1999 Highest Snowfall Total: 19 inches in Medford. Snowfall amounts of 8 inches or more were reported across a large part of north central and northeast Oklahoma.
5. - tie Mar. 4-5, 1989 Highest Snowfall Total: 18 inches in Kansas, Oklahoma in Delaware County. Near-blizzard conditions occurred from south central through southeast Oklahoma.
5. - tie Jan. 18-19, 1990 Highest Snowfall Total: 18 inches in Goodwell. Localized amounts between 12 and 18 inches fell in the western two-thirds of the Oklahoma Panhandle.
7. - tie Mar. 30-31, 1973 Highest Snowfall Total: 17 inches in Kenton. A foot or more in Cimarron County in the western Panhandle of Oklahoma.
7. - tie Jan. 5-7, 1998 Highest Snowfall Total: 17 inches in Hennessey. Snow was reported over virtually the entire state, and there were widespread reports of 8 inches or more.
7. - tie Apr. 1-2, 1998 Highest Snowfall Total: 17 inches in Goodwell. Heavy snow was confined to the Oklahoma Panhandle .
10. Dec. 13-15, 1987 Highest Snowfall Total: 16 inches in Helena. Snowfall amounts of 4 inches or more were reported across much of northern and central Oklahoma.
