NWS Norman, Oklahoma - New Web-Based Watch/Warning/Advisory Map Colors

Watch/Warning/Advisory Map Display Color Changes

The color scheme for the Watch/Warning/Advisory map on all National Weather Service Forecast Office home pages changed October 1, 2004. New technology has allowed an increase in the number of colors that can be displayed on the maps, providing for more information to be conveyed to the user in a single glance.

World Wide Web usability experts from the National Institutes of Health were consulted and provided advice to the tone and hue of the colors used in relation to the type and urgency of the specific type of event. Additional testing was done to better ensure information is not lost when the maps are viewed by users with color deficiencies.

The current color code table below displays examples of the new map colors, and can also be found here. These colors are listed as they would be displayed on the Watch/Warning/Advisory map in order of priority, i.e., if a tornado warning and a severe thunderstorm warning were issued and in effect for the same county, the county area would be colored in red instead of orange.
