Zone 004>026- 09 0200CST
A late season snow storm deposited record amounts of snow in portions
of northern Oklahoma. Snowfall amounts were generally between 6 and 10
inches across the northern half of Oklahoma with several locations in
excess of 1 foot. The snow was accompanied by occasional thunder and
lightning. Wind gusts in excess of 40 mph resulted in considerable
blowing and drifting snow. Snow drifts were up to 5 feet deep in
places. Many schools and several roads were closed, numerous motorists
were stranded and several commercial airline flights at Will Rogers
Airport were canceled. There were hundreds of traffic accidents which
resulted in two fatalities and many injuries. A woman lost her life on
route 132 8 miles north of Carrier after the van she was riding slid
into another vehicle. Another fatality accident occurred in the 5200
block of South Douglas in Oklahoma City. In a 12 hour period in
Oklahoma City, 203 non-injury and 36 injury accidents were reported.
The weight of the heavy snow broke off tree limbs in several locations,
snapped a wooden warehouse beam at a store in Watonga and collapsed the
roof of the Recreation Center in Canton. A man died of a heart attack
while walking from his stranded vehicle 7 miles north of Gould in
Harmon County.
