Severe thunderstorms developed in northeast Oklahoma ahead of a cold
front during the late afternoon of April 24th and moved across eastern
and portions of eastern Oklahoma during the night. The thunderstorms
spawned 8 tornadoes, and produced hail to baseball size and damaging
                 straight line winds.
The first two tornadoes of the day were the most destructive. The
first tornado touched down in East Tulsa near 6th Street and 135th East
Avenue at 1750CST. This tornado moved northeast for about a mile before
entering Rogers County at 1753CST. There, a truck stop near Interstate
44 and 161st East Avenue took a direct hit from the tornado. Numerous
tractor-trailers and cars were destroyed in the vicinity of the truck
stop. 6 people were killed at or near the truck stop. The tornado then
continued northeast into Catoosa where several residential
neighborhoods and the Colonial Port Mobile Home Park received heavy
damage. The 7th and final fatality associated with this tornado
occurred at the mobile home park. The tornado dissipated at 1803CST 1
mile west of State Highway 66 north of Catoosa. This F4 tornado
                 traveled 5.5 miles and was 250 yards wide. Tornado M70P, M39V, F39V,
                 F8V, M33V, M35O and F77M.
A second tornado formed at 1757CST near the truck stop at Interstate 44
and 161st East Avenue and moved east northeast. This tornado also
caused heavy damage to Catoosa, but resulted in no additional
fatalities. The tornado lifted at 1815CST 1.5 miles north of State
Highway 412 to the east of Catoosa. This F3 tornado traveled 8 miles
and was 250 yards wide. The two tornadoes injured about 130 people, and
damaged or destroyed 70% of the businesses in Catoosa. 8 to 10 million
dollars worth of damage was done to the Catoosa schools, with the high
school sustaining the brunt of the damage. Total damage caused by the
tornadoes has been estimated at over 100 million dollars. This
thunderstorm also produced a microburst which destroyed a church at
15th Street and Memorial Drive in Tulsa, and damaged several other
Tulsa businesses. Straight line winds also caused damage to homes and

to 8 inches of rain fell on the Lake Carl Blackwell watershed,
resulting in flash flooding across southwestern portions of Stillwater
and the evacuation of over 100 people. Numerous roads were closed and
two apartment complexes and 12 homes were evacuated because of the high
water. A man drove around barricades and attempted to drive across a
flooded road. The truck stalled in the water and the driver was quickly
rescued. The passenger in the truck spent over an hour in a tree before
being rescued. On route 183, 4 miles north of Cordell, a man attempted
to drive across a flooded road. The car stalled in the water and he
spent several minutes on his cartop before being rescued. High water
resulted in the closing of route 58 just north of Carnegie and a road
2 miles west of Fort Cobb. A stranded vehicle was found in high water
on route 9 about 10 miles west of Anadarko. Flooding occurred just off
State Highway 48 from 1 to 6 miles south of Bristow, in Depew and
Dewar. Elk Creek rose out of its banks in McIntosh County and as a
result the road leading from U.S. Highway 69 to Rentiesville was
covered with 2 to 3 feet of water. Numerous locations in western
Oklahoma recieved hail up to golfball size and strong winds up to 70
mph. Strong thunderstorm winds downed tree limbs in Elk City, downed a
tree in Ryan, severely damaged a paint and body shop 6 miles south of
Rush Springs, ripped a portion of the sheet metal roof off a gas
station just south of Rush Springs, blew down a tree 4 miles east of
Meers and blew over an empty cattle truck 5 miles west of Walters. A
lightning strike started a fire which destroyed the Davidson silo, an
Ellis County landmark. Lightning fires resulted in minor damage to a
house 2 miles north of Rush Springs, resulted in an estimated $8,000 in
damage to a boarding home in Sapulpa and destroyed a home in Stigler.
Lightning was responsible for knocking out the Lawton firefighters
                 dispatch console.
