The March 30-31, 2013 Severe Weather Event

Synopsis

There were two rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms that impacted the region over the weekend of the March 30-31, 2013. The first round of severe weather developed in the evening across portions of southern and central Oklahoma along a weak pre frontal trough that stretched across the Southern Plains from the Caprock to the Missouri Ozarks. Clearing across the western half of Oklahoma through the late morning and early afternoon resulted in temperatures climbing into the 70s and 80s. Combined with these warm temperatures, seasonable dew points in the mid to upper 50s provided good overall instability from central Oklahoma to northern Texas. Between 5 and 6 PM CDT, a few isolated thunderstorms quickly developed near the Wichita Mountains and central Oklahoma. Large hail developed with these storms, with many reports (see summary of Local Storm Reports below) of 1 to 1.5 inch hail. The strongest of these storms, over Comanche County, near Cache, produced 2.30 inch hail.  The few isolated updrafts slowly weakened/dissipated through 10pm, leading to a lull in activity until later in the evening as the primariy cold front finally surged through the region.

The second round of thunderstorms were focused primarily along a strong cold front that surged southward across the Oklahoma and into northern Texas by Sunday morning. The first showers developed shortly before midnight across northwestern Oklahoma, and quickly intensified through the early morning hours of the 31st as the front quickly moved southward into the better axis of instability across central Oklahoma. These initial updrafts quickly intensified and congealed into a semi-organized squall line that moved directly through the Oklahoma City metro after 3 AM CDT. Winds along this line were estimated to be near 60 mph, with reports of quarter sized hail in OKC, numerous reports of quarter to golf ball sized hail in Norman, and quarter sized south through Carter and Johnston Counties. The squall line surged quickly to the south crossing the Red River Valley between 6 and 7 AM CDT where it continued to produce large hail and severe winds across northern Texas.

Radar Loop

The radar loop spans from 5:07 PM CDT on March 30, 2013 through 5:59 AM CDT on March 31, 2013.
