AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.AVIATION...
A SECOND LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS NOW ALONG...NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE
BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE TEXAS PANHANDLE AND WESTERN OKLAHOMA IS
EXPECTED TO MOVE EAST THIS AFTERNOON. WE HAVE FAIRLY HIGH
CONFIDENCE THAT THIS WILL BRING THUNDER TO SOUTHERN TAF SITES
/KLAW AND KSPS/ WITH CONFIDENCE DECREASING FARTHER NORTH. PATCHY
DENSE FOG WILL BE A POSSIBILITY OVERNIGHT AHEAD OF A DRYLINE
PUSHING EAST ACROSS THE AREA...BUT WITH WIND SPEEDS EXPECTED TO
STAY UP WE KEPT OVERNIGHT VISIBILITY IN THE HIGH MVFR RANGE.

&&

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 1127 AM CST MON MAR 8 2010/

DISCUSSION...
MADE A FEW ADJUSTMENTS TO POPS FOR THIS AFTERNOON. WIDESPREAD RAIN
WITH EMBEDDED STORMS EXPECTED TO SWEEP ACROSS THE REGION...WITH
GREATEST COVERAGE OF RAIN WITH FIRST BAND CURRENTLY MOVING EASTWARD
THROUGH THE CENTRAL PORTIONS OF OKLAHOMA. BEST LARGE SCALE FORCING
OCCURRING WITH THIS BAND AS MID/UPPER LEVEL JET PROGRESSES OVER
REGION. SECOND BAND OF SHOWERS AND STORMS CURRENTLY ACROSS
PANHANDLES AND WEST TEXAS WILL PROGRESS EASTWARD THIS AFTERNOON
ALONG AND JUST AHEAD OF A DRY LINE AND WILL HAVE LESS LARGE SCALE
FORCING...BUT LAPSE RATES WILL BECOME GREATER AND LOW LEVELS WILL
GAIN MOISTURE. THUS...THE STORMS IN THIS SECOND BAND WILL BE
STRONGER...AND A FEW SEVERE STORMS PRODUCING LARGE HAIL CANNOT BE
RULED OUT. ONCE THIS SECOND LINE PASSES...THE THREAT FOR STRONG
AND SEVERE STORMS EXPECTED TO ALSO PASS.

WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE
EAST THIS AFTERNOON. FAR SOUTHWEST OKLAHOMA AND WESTERN NORTH TEXAS
SHOULD STAY RAIN-FREE THE REST OF THIS AFTERNOON...BUT THE REST OF
OKLAHOMA WILL HAVE AT LEAST BRIEF PERIOD OF LIGHT TO MODERATE RAIN.
THE BEST CHANCES FOR STRONGER STORMS WILL BE OVER CENTRAL AND
SOUTH-CENTRAL OKLAHOMA...FROM AROUND KINGFISHER AND THE OKLAHOMA
CITY METRO AREA...DOWN THROUGH ADA...ARDMORE...AND LAKE TEXOMA.
ALTHOUGH ORGANIZED SEVERE WEATHER CHANCES ARE FAIRLY LOW...A FEW OF
THE STORMS MAY PRODUCE DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND LARGE HAIL.

FARTHER WEST...ISOLATED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE
POSSIBLE OVER NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA...CLOSER TO VERY COLD TEMPERATURES
ALOFT. WITH SUCH COLD TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER LEVELS OF THE
ATMOSPHERE...ANY STORMS OVER NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA MAY BE EFFICIENT
HAIL PRODUCERS. ANY ACTIVITY THAT MOVES INTO NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA WILL
LIKELY WEAKEN TOWARD AND AFTER SUNSET.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORMAN OK
332 PM CST MON MAR 8 2010

.DISCUSSION...
AN UPPER LOW OVER NEW MEXICO IS CONTINUING ITS EASTWARD
PROGRESSION AS AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW IS CENTERED IN THE
VICINITY OF FAR SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO. A DRYLINE CONNECTED TO THIS
SURFACE LOW HAS SURGED EASTWARD IN THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS...WITH
STRONG THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRING JUST AHEAD OF THE DRYLINE. OTHER
THUNDERSTORMS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE NORTHEAST TX PANHANDLE...AND
IN THE LUBBOCK AREA.

COOLING WILL OCCUR ALOFT THIS EVENING FROM WEST TO EAST WITH A
CONCURRENT INCREASE IN MID LEVEL LAPSE RATES. THERE MAY BE A BRIEF
WINDOW FOR SOME STORMS CAPABLE OF LARGE HAIL THIS EVENING IN
NORTHWEST OK EAST OF THE SURFACE LOW CENTER WHERE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE
WILL PERSIST A LITTLE LONGER THAN IN AREAS FURTHER SOUTH.
OTHERWISE...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO EXIT THE
CWA TO THE NORTHEAST BY SOMETIME EARLY TUESDAY MORNING.

STRONG WEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED ON TUESDAY. SPEEDS MAY BE SOMEWHAT
LIGHTER ACROSS NORTHERN OK WHERE CLOUDS ARE EXPECTED TO PERSIST
FOR MUCH OF THE DAY...BUT MIXING WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY ALLOW FOR
GUSTY WEST WINDS ACROSS SOUTHWESTERN PORTIONS OF THE CWA.
INITIALIZED NAM WIND SPEEDS WERE JUDGED TO BE TOO LOW AND HAVE
BEEN BUMPED UP.

A TROUGH NOW MOVING ONTO THE COAST OF NORTHERN CA APPEARS TO HAVE
ALREADY CLOSED OFF...AND SHOULD REACH THE SOUTHERN PLAINS ON
WEDNESDAY. ALL MODELS SHOW THE LOW DEEPENING AS IT MOVES OUT OF
THE ROCKIES...THEN MAKING A NORTHWARD TURN ONCE IT REACHES THE
WESTERN PORTION OF THE CWA. SUCH A TRACK WOULD PLACE MUCH OF THE
OUN CWA IN A DRY SLOT...WITH LOW RAIN CHANCES BUT WITH TEMPERATURES
COOLER THAN TUESDAY. INITIALIZED POPS AND TEMPERATURES FOLLOW THIS
TREND...AND WE LEFT THEM LARGELY UNCHANGED.

WITH THE WEDNESDAY LOW MEANDERING AROUND TO THE NORTHEAST OF THE
AREA...LOW PRECIP CHANCES CONTINUE THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK.
THE FORECAST BEYOND THURSDAY FROM THE PREVIOUS SHIFT HAS BEEN LEFT
INTACT. PLENTY OF UNCERTAINTY EXISTS REGARDING THE MOVEMENT OF
MULTIPLE UPPER LOWS FROM THE WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK.

SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE NORTHEAST
THIS AFTERNOON. THE MOST WIDESPREAD ACTIVITY WILL BE ACROSS CENTRAL

RENO... TO HEALDTON. THE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE TO
AFFECT TRAFFIC ALONG MOST OF INTERSTATE 35 THROUGH OKLAHOMA... AND
ALONG INTERSTATE 40 FROM OKLAHOMA EAST INTO ARKANSAS. SOME OF THE
STRONGER STORMS COULD PRODUCE BRIEF STRONG WINDS AND SMALL HAIL.

ELSEWHERE... SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL ALSO MOVE
ACROSS THE WESTERN PARTS OF OKLAHOMA AND NORTH TEXAS THROUGH THE
REMAINDER OF THE AFTERNOON. SOME OF THE STORMS MAY CONTAIN BRIEF
WIND GUSTS TO NEAR 50 MPH AND SMALL HAIL. THIS ACTIVITY WAS
DEVELOPING UNDER AN AREA MARKED BY COLD TEMPERATURES ALOFT...
ASSOCIATED WITH AN UPPER LEVEL STORMS SYSTEM CENTERED OVER SOUTHWEST

REGIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORMAN OK
800 PM CST MON MAR 8 2010

THIS AFTERNOON... A LARGE SCALE STORM SYSTEM SPINNING ACROSS THE
CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN HIGH PLAINS HAD PRODUCED WIDESPREAD SHOWERS
WITH EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS ALL OF WESTERN AND CENTRAL
OKLAHOMA AND WESTERN NORTH TEXAS. RAINFALL ACCUMULATIONS WERE
BETWEEN HALF AND INCH TO AN INCH. THE TEMPERATURES HAD WARMED INTO
THE MID 50S TO LOWER 60. THE SURFACE LOW PRESSURE ASSOCIATED WITH
THE STORM SYSTEM KEPT THE WINDS BREEZY AND OUT OF THE SOUTHEAST AT
15 TO 20 MPH... WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 MPH. BY MID AFTERNOON...
CLOUDINESS HAD DECREASED ACROSS MUCH OF WESTERN OKLAHOMA AND WESTERN
NORTH TEXAS. HOWEVER... BY 5 PM... ISOLATED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
HAD FIRED UP ACROSS FAR WESTERN OKLAHOMA... WHICH PRODUCED A FEW
BRIEF TORNADOES ACROSS LOCATIONS SUCH AS HAMMON. THE STORMS HAD
WEAKENED SHORTLY AFTER SUNSET... AND CONTINUED TO TRACK TO THE
NORTHEAST.

AT 8 PM... NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA HAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS...
WHILE SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA AND WESTERN NORTH TEXAS WAS MOSTLY
CLEAR. THE REST OF THE REGION REMAINED MOSTLY CLOUDY. THE
TEMPERATURES HAD SO FAR FALLEN INTO THE LOWER TO MID 50S. THE WINDS
PERSISTED OUT OF THE SOUTHEAST AT 10 TO 15 MPH... WITH SLIGHTLY
HIGHER GUSTS.
