Sands Motel Damage in Vernon, TX
Photo #4: Sands Motel Damage: A pile of rubble resembling a war zone was all that was left of the Sands Motel and Canton Cafe located on the eastern edge of Vernon. Cars and trucks are also among the ruins.The tornado struckthe town around 3:50 p.m. and killed not only residents, including a teacher and her daughter, but travelers on U.S. Highway 287 whose automobiles were tossed around like toys.

Photo #5: Tossed by the Tornado: A truck maintains a precarious balance on the loading dock of Merchants Freight Lines following the tornado which damaged or destroyed many buildings along East Wilbarger. Jones Sones, manager of the company, was alone in the building at the time the tornado struck and managed to jump down between some concrete stairs for protection.
