3. Vertical Profilers

NOAA Profiler Network

This site provides information about NOAA's Wind Profiler Network and the location of profilers in the United States. In essence, profilers provide surveilence of upper level winds through the detection of minute fluctuations in atmospheric density.

Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS)

This site is provided by NOAA's Environmental Technology Laboratory.

This is a balloon-borne radar wind profiler (RWP) used to augment the established NOAA network of wind profilers across the central U.S. to support weather forecasting operations.

Wind/Temperature Profiler

This site is provided by McGill University, and describes their vertical profiler system, which includes a UHF wind profiler radar and a Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) for upper air temperature surveilence.
