JANUARY 5-7, 2014: ARCTIC AIR AND SNOW BLUSTER INTO MIDDLE TENNESSEE

The much-heralded arrival of an Arctic cold front in Middle Tennessee took place late Sunday afternoon and Sunday night, January 5th and 6th. The front arrived at Clarksville between 4pm and 5 pm Sunday afternoon, breezed past Nashville by 7 pm, and raced past Crossville (over Eastern Middle Tennessee) around 9 pm.

The frigid air arrived with a batch of snow that left behind between 1 and 3 inches along the higher elevations along the Upper Cumberland, and dusted areas west of the Upper Cumberland with between 1/4 and 1/2 inch.

Here are the snowfall reports from counties that received at least 1/2 inch:

One of the main travel problems outside the snowy east was the patchy black ice that formed on wet pavements when the temperatures plummeted behind the cold front - especially on secondary roads. As late as Monday night, scattered snow showers were still continuing along the Upper Cumberland, with temperatures in the low single digits. By Tuesday morning, the coldest part of the Arctic Air mass had settled in across the Mid State, with some 27 locations reporting sub-zero low temperatures. Amanda Williams, in Joelton, sent us this picture of her outdoor thermometer, taken at 526 am, January 7th:
