2011 Flood Safety Awareness Week - Floods, Droughts and other Related Phenomena

...DAY 3 OF 2011 NATIONAL FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK...

YOUR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INVITES YOUR PARTICIPATION IN ITS
ANNUAL NATIONAL FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK, MARCH 14-18, 2011.

TODAY’S THEME IS TROPICAL CYCLONE INLAND FLOODING. WIND SPEEDS IN
TROPICAL CYCLONES (A GENERIC TERM FOR HURRICANES, TYPHOONS OR
TROPICAL STORMS) DON’T TELL THE WHOLE STORY; INTENSE RAINFALL, NOT
DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE WIND SPEED OF A TROPICAL CYCLONE, OFTEN
CAUSES MORE DAMAGE. SINCE THE 1970’S, INLAND FRESHWATER FLOODING HAS
BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR MORE THAN HALF OF THE DEATHS ASSOCIATED WITH
TROPICAL CYCLONES IN THE UNITED STATES. RAINFALL IS TYPICALLY
HEAVIER WITH SLOWER MOVING STORMS AS THEY ALLOW HEAVY RAIN TO
PERSIST OVER A LOCATION. FLOOD IMPACTS CAN RANGE FROM URBANIZED
FLOODING TO RIVER FLOODING TO FLASH FLOODING.

HERE ARE SOME TERMS THAT WE USE TO INFORM YOU OF THE FLOOD THREAT:

- A FLOOD WATCH OR FLASH FLOOD WATCH INDICATES THAT CONDITIONS ARE
  FAVORABLE FOR FLOODING TO HAPPEN.

- A FLOOD WARNING OR FLASH FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS
  OCCURRING OR IS IMMINENT.

- MINOR FLOODING IS WHEN MINIMAL OR NO PROPERTY DAMAGE IS EXPECTED
TO OCCUR, BUT THE FLOODING COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE SOME PUBLIC THREAT
  OR INCONVENIENCE.

- MODERATE FLOODING IS WHEN SOME INUNDATION OF STRUCTURES AND ROADS
NEAR STREAMS WILL OCCUR. SOME EVACUATIONS OF PEOPLE AND/OR A
  TRANSFER OF PROPERTY ARE NECESSARY.

- MAJOR FLOODING IS WHEN THERE IS EXTENSIVE INUNDATION OF STRUCTURES
AND ROADS ALONG WITH POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT EVACUATIONS OF PEOPLE
  AND/OR TRANSFER OF PROPERTY.
