Prior to that tornado, the last December tornado in Middle Tennessee was a F4 tornado that struck Franklin and Brentwood on December 24 1988, with 1 person killed and 7 others injured.

By January, severe weather including tornadoes becomes more common across the Mid State, with 56 tornadoes having occurred in Middle Tennessee in the month of January since 1950.  Just last year on January 30, 2013, at least 23 tornadoes touched down all across the Mid State.
