Arctic high pressure is forecast to move down from Canada into the continental U. S. this weekend bringing the coldest air so far of the 2009-2010 winter season to Middle Tennessee. This weather pattern although similar will not be quite as cold as the one back on January 1st 1977 when Nashville recorded its coldest New Year's Day temperature on record with 0 degrees. The weather map below depicts the surface pressure pattern along with the synoptic observations at 6 A. M. C. S. T. on January 1, 1977.
