April 2014 Climate for NE FL & SE GA: Wet with River Flooding

April 2014 continued the pattern of wetter than normal conditions since the beginning of the year and this culminated in significant river flooding across all of Southeast Georgia and across the Suwannee River Basin of Northeast Florida. Temperatures in April ended up near normal with cooler, periods of rainfall during the middle of the month bookended by above normal temperatures with highs in the 80s. The observed precipitation totals for April show a very sharp line of demarcation where above normal rainfall amounts fell along and north of the Interstate 10 Corridor in North Florida and across all of Southeast Georgia. The climate sites of Alma, GA and St. Simons Island, GA both received close to 8 inches of rainfall for the month and were ranked in the Top 3 wettest April's on record. A local maximum of 10 to 12 inches of rainfall fell across upper portions of the Suwannee and Alapaha River Basin pushing them into moderate river flooding levels. Areas from Jacksonville to Gainesville southward across Northeast Florida generally received 2 to 5 inches of rainfall, near to below normal amounts for April and river flooding was kept to a minimum.
