New Climate Normals

New Climate Normals go into Effect August 1st

Jason Hess, Climate Focal Point NWS Jacksonville

The new climate normals have been released by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). These normals will be used in daily and seasonal climate products issued by the National Weather Service starting on August 1st, 2011. The National Weather Service office in Jacksonville issues climate products for two locations in Northeast Florida (Jacksonville and Gainesville) and two locations in Southeast Georgia (Alma and St. Simons Island). The new 1981-2010 climate normals for these 4 locations are listed in the tables below. The annual climate totals for the new normals (1981-2010) and the old annual climate totals (1971-2000) are also listed in the tables for comparison purposes. Basically, the "cooler and wetter" decade of the 1970s was removed from the normals, and the "warmer and drier" first decade of the new millenium was added to the normals. Temperatures in the new normals increased by less than a degree at all stations except for a slight cooling trend noted at Alma.  All of the climate stations reported a drier trend in the annual precipitation totals except for Jacksonville where the amount remained nearly the same.  The drier annual precipitation totals are more of an indication of the more prevalent and prolonged drought conditions across the region over the past decade.
