The National Weather Association's Walter J. Bennett Award is presented to someone that directly assists the meteorological community by providing weather-related information to the public. Since Bob Pickering joined the Flagler County Emergency Management team in 1994, he has provided exceptional, selfless service to the public and the NWS during both normal weather operations and significant weather events, including numerous tropical cyclones, severe storms and wildfires.

Bob initiates and hosts several NWS Storm Spotter Classes each year, and Flagler County has the largest number of trained NWS Storm Spotters than any other county in the NWS Jacksonville’s county warning area due to Bob’s contagious weather enthusiasm and diligent recruiting efforts. He was instumental in making Flagler County the first StormReady® county in the state of Florida. Bob’s dedication to weather awareness and promoting weather safety in his community has no doubt indirectly saved countless lives.
Bob’s genuine desire for helping others and his deep respect for the weather combine to drive his education and protection efforts for those within his community. The NWS Jacksonville congratulates Bob "BP" Pickering for recieving the 2010 National Weather Association’s Walter J. Bennett Public Service Award.
