...RIP CURRENTS: ONE OF NATURE`S MOST DANGEROUS KILLERS...

AS THE OCEAN SURF TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO SLOWLY RISE DURING
SPRING MONTHS...MORE SWIMMERS WILL BE ENTERING THE SURF ZONE
AT NORTHEAST FLORIDA AND SOUTHEAST GEORGIA BEACHES. STATISTICS
SHOW THAT BEGINNING BY APRIL RIP CURRENT RESCUES AND DROWNINGS OCCUR
WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY AS THE WATER BECOMES MORE INVITING TO
BEACH-GOERS. WITH ADDITIONAL PEOPLE ENTERING THE WATER IN THE
SPRING...RIP CURRENTS WILL CONTINUE TO BE A SERIOUS HAZARD
AT SURF BEACHES.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BE ALWAYS COGNIZANT OF THE THREAT OF RIP
CURRENTS ANYTIME YOU ENTER THE SURF ZONE. TO ADDRESS THIS CONCERN
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO CONSIDER...

...MONITOR THE LATEST RIP CURRENT FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS FROM THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE VIA NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND THE INTERNET...
AS WELL AS THROUGH LOCAL TELEVISION AND RADIO. MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE
SURF CONDITIONS BEFORE HEADING TO THE BEACH AND ALWAYS SWIM WITHIN
SIGHT OF LIFEGUARDS. KNOW HOW TO SWIM AND DON`T SWIM ALONE.

...ALWAYS SWIM AT A GUARDED BEACH. HEED THE ADVICE OF LIFEGUARDS AND
PAY ATTENTION TO WARNING FLAGS POSTED AT LIFEGUARD STANDS AND AT
BEACH ACCESS POINTS.

...IF YOU ARE CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...REMAIN CALM TO CONSERVE
ENERGY AND THINK CLEARLY. NEVER FIGHT AGAINST THE CURRENT. SWIM OUT
OF THE CURRENT IN A DIRECTION PARALLEL TO THE SHORELINE. WHEN OUT OF
THE CURRENT...SWIM AT AN ANGLE AWAY FROM THE CURRENT AND TOWARD THE
SHORE. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO SWIM OUT OF THE RIP CURRENT...FLOAT OR
CALMLY TREAD WATER. WHEN OUT OF THE CURRENT...SWIM TOWARD SHORE. IF
YOU ARE UNABLE TO REACH SHORE...DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF BY WAVING
YOUR ARMS AND YELLING FOR HELP.

...IF YOU SEE SOMEONE IN TROUBLE...DON`T BECOME A VICTIM YOURSELF.
MANY PEOPLE DROWN WHILE TRYING TO SAVE SOMEONE ELSE FROM A RIP
CURRENT. GET HELP FROM A LIFEGUARD...OR IF ONE IS UNAVAILABLE...HAVE
SOMEONE CALL 9 1 1. THROW THE RIP CURRENT VICTIM SOMETHING THAT
FLOATS SUCH AS A LIFE JACKET...COOLER OR INFLATABLE BALL. YELL
INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO ESCAPE.

THE TIME YOU TAKE TO UNDERSTAND RIP CURRENTS CAN HELP YOU PROTECT
YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES WHEN VISITING THE BEACHES.
