Cold Start to 2010

An extended period of near and sub-freezing temperatures is expected across the Jacksonville county warning area this week.  A strong continental polar airmass over Canada will funnel into the Deep South on the eastside of a persistent surface ridge (Figure 1, cP image; Figure 2, MSL).  An omega blocking pattern in the upper levels of the atmosphere will also continue a cold and dry northwest flow over the local area through much of the upcoming week (Figure 3, 500 mb heights).

The table below identifies various climate data sites throughout our area of responsibility, and gives the most number of consecutive days at or below freezing (32 ° F) as well as the most number of consecutive days at or below hard freeze temperatures (27 ° F) at each site.
