Weak tornadoes across southwest Virginia
June 16, 2009


On June 16, 2009, a line of severe thunderstorms moved across southwest Virginia and produced some brief, weak tornadoes. A storm survey determined that three EF0 tornadoes touched down in Lee, Russell, and Washington counties of southwest Virginia.

...THREE SEPARATE AREAS OF BRIEF EF0 TORNADO DAMAGE CONFIRMED IN 
LEE...RUSSELL AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MORRISTOWN HAS COMPLETED AN ASSESSMENT 
OF THE DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED IN PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA ON 
TUESDAY EVENING. IN LEE COUNTY VIRGINIA...IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED 
THAT AN EF0 TORNADO WITH MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS OF 65 MILES AN HOUR...
BRIEFLY TOUCHED DOWN IN JONESVILLE VIRGINIA. THE TORNADO HAD A PATH 
LENGTH OF A TENTH OF A MILE AND PATH WIDTH OF 20 YARDS. 

A SECOND EF0 TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN BRIEFLY NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF 
HIGHWAYS 71 AND 58 IN RUSSELL COUNTY VIRGINIA. THIS TORNADO PRODUCED 
SOME TREE DAMAGE JUST SOUTH OF THE CASTLEWOOD VIRGINIA AREA. THE 
MAXIMUM WIND SPEED OF THIS TORNADO WAS 70 MILES AN HOUR...WITH A 
PATH WIDTH ALSO AT 20 YARDS AND A PATH LENGTH OF TWO TENTHS OF A 
MILE. 

THE THIRD EFO TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN BRIEFLY ABOUT THREE MILES 
SOUTHEAST OF ABINGDON VIRGINIA...HAD A 20 YARD PATH WIDTH...PATH 
LENGTH OF A TENTH OF A MILE...AND PRODUCED MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS AT 
70 MILES AN HOUR. A FEW TREES WERE DOWNED DUE TO THE TORNADO.
