This U.S. Forest Service site is located in the southeast portion of Monroe County, Tennessee. This RAWS is a solar powered, voice actuated HANDAR platform. The RAWS is located on a knoll at an elevation of 1700 feet MSL, and is away from trees and other obstacles which results in good exposure in all directions. The surrounding area is a broad valley with rolling hills. There are high mountains around three miles to the southeast (Unicoi Mountains along the Tennessee and North Carolina state line, with elevations up to 3700 feet MSL) and smaller mountains to the west with Tellico Mountain being the tallest (located around three miles to the northwest at an elevation of 1967 feet MSL). About a mile to the northeast, the valley begins a sharp drop to the Tellico River.
Being in a somewhat protected valley, winds at this site will likely be a little less than reported by the Chattanooga ASOS for a given synoptic pattern. However, the elevation is around 1000 feet higher, so in most instances, temperatures and humidity will be different. Since the station is not located on a mountain, slope rules will not apply. The location of this RAWS in the foothills of the Unicoi Mountains makes it a good site to observe mountain-wave-induced winds during a southeasterly wind flow in a stable enviroment.
