Local Climatic Items of Interest for June
BELOW-NORMAL RAINFALL IN JUNE
- Despite a few days with moderate to heavy rainfall provided by thunderstorms, the monthly rainfall total for June was below normal at all three sites. No daily rainfall records were broken.
- Chattanooga received 2.87 inches of rain in June, which was 1.12 inches below normal. It ranked in the middle one-third of the 130 years of observations taken at Chattanooga in June. Measurable rain fell on only ten days, and only three of those days received more than one-quarter of an inch. The heaviest rain fell on the 1st when 1.20 inches of rain was recorded, which accounted for nearly one-half of the total rainfall for the entire month. The driest June at Chattanooga was back in 1931, when only 0.29 inches was recorded.
- Knoxville received 2.19 inches of rain in June, which was 1.85 inches below normal. It ranked as the 20th driest June on record at Knoxville. Measurable rain fell on only ten days, and only three of those days received more than one-quarter of an inch. The heaviest rainfall fell on the 1st, when 0.78 inches of rain was recorded. The driest June of the 138 years of observations taken at Knoxville, was back in 1944, when only 0.20 inches was recorded.
- Tri-Cities received 2.26 inches of rain in June, which was 1.63 inches below normal. It ranked as the 17th driest June on record at Tri-Cities. Measurable rain fell on only eight days, and only three of those days received more than one-quarter of an inch. The heaviest rainfall fell on the 14th, when 0.84 inches of rain was reported. The driest June, of the 71 years of observations taken at Tri-Cities, was back in 1986, when only 0.75 inches was recorded.
ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN JUNE
- Daily temperatures fluctuated considerably in June, but the monthly-averaged temperatures ended up above normal. Tri-Cities experienced the greatest temperature swing. Five consecutive daily record high temperatures were broken or tied at Tri-Cities, followed by a daily record low temperature just two weeks later. No daily temperatures records were broken at Chattanooga or Knoxville.
- The monthly-averaged temperature at Chattanooga was 78.4 degrees, which was 3.0 degrees above normal. It tied with 1939, 1986, and 1998 as the 15th warmest June on record at Chattanooga. The warmest June at Chattanooga was back in 1952, when the average temperature was 82.2 degrees.
- The monthly-averaged temperature at Knoxville was 76.6 degrees, which was 2.8 degrees above normal. It tied with 1891 and 2002 as the 23rd warmest June on record at Knoxville. The warmest June at Knoxville was back in 1952, when the average temperature was 81.4 degrees.
- The monthly-averaged temperature at Tri-Cities was 73.2 degrees, which was 2.5 degrees above normal. It tied with 1941 as the 16th warmest June on record at Tri-Cities. A daily record high temperature was tied on the 5th when the afternoon high temperature peaked at 93 degrees, tying the previous record set back in 1943. In addition, a daily record high temperature was broken the next day when the high temperature reached 95 degrees, breaking the old record of 94 degrees set back in 1943. Another high temperature record was tied the following day when the temperature peaked at 93 degrees, tying the previous record set last year. In addition, a record high temperature was tied the following day when the temperature rose to 94 degrees, tying the previous record set in 1969. Lastly, a new record high temperature was set the next day when the temperature reached 94 degrees, breaking the previous record of 93 degrees set in 1999. On the other end of the record scale, a record low temperature was broken on the 20th when the overnight low dipped to 48 degrees, breaking the previous record of 51 degrees set in 1985. The warmest June at Tri-Cities was back in 1952, when the average temperature was 77.9 degrees.
