ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATIONFALL IN JANUARY
Several days with heavy precipitation were reported resulting in above normal precipitation for the month. In fact, Tri-Cities experienced the wettest January on record. Daily precipitation records were broken at all 3 sites. Wintery conditions were reported during the middle of the month making driving hazard. Tri-Cities had the most snow for the month receiving 3.5 inches of snow, while Knoxville ended up with 1.4 inches on snow and Chattanooga had no snow for the month. The mountains received the highest snow accumulations.
Chattanooga received 9.74 inches of precipitation in January, which was 4.83 inches above normal. It ranked as the 8th wettest January on record. Measurable precipitation occurred on 14 days and 6 of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of precipitation. The heaviest precipitation fell on the 30th when 2.17 inches of precipitation was recorded, which also broke the previous record of 1.24 inches set in 1980. An addition 5.38 inches of precipitation was reported during a 3 day period from 13th- 15th. The wettest January of the 133 years of observations taken was in 1882 when 14.74 inches of precipitation was recorded.
Knoxville received 12.67 inches of precipitation in January, which was 8.35 inches above normal. It ranked as the 2nd wettest January on record. Measurable precipitation occurred on 12 days and 8 of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of precipitation. One daily rainfall record was broken on the 14th when 1.93 inches of precipitation was reported, which surpassed the previous record of 1.32 inches fell in 1999. In addition, nearly 3 inches of precipitation was reported on the next day and again on the 30th of the month. The wettest January of the 141 years of observations taken in Knoxville was in 1882 when 16.98 inches of precipitation was recorded.
Tri-Cities received 9.99 inches of precipitation in January, which was 6.62 inches above normal. It ranked as the wettest January on record. Measurable precipitation occurred on 16 days and 8 of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of precipitation. The heaviest precipitation fell on the 15th when 2.38 inches of precipitation was reported, which also broke the previous record of 2.18 set in 1954. Another precipitation record was broken on previous day when 1.84 inches fell eclipsing the record of 1.48 inches set 1940. A precipitation record was also broken on the following day when 1.05 inches of precipitation was reported breaking the old record of 0.72 inches set 1950. In addition, In addition, around 2 inches of precipitation fell on the 30th of the month. The previous wettest January of the 74 years of observations taken at Tri-Cities was in 1957 when 9.18 inches of precipitation was recorded.
ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN JANUARY
After a large swing in daily temperatures during January, monthly–averaged temperature ended up above normal for the month. In addition, all 3 sites broke temperature records during the middle of the month.
The monthly-averaged temperature at Chattanooga in January was 45.4 degrees which was 4.9 degrees above normal. It tied with 1939 and 1879 as the 24th warmest January on record. One record high temperature was broken on the 12th when the temperature reached 72 degrees, breaking the previous record of 71 degrees set in 1971. The warm January at Chattanooga was in 1950 when the average temperature was 53.7 degrees.
The monthly-averaged temperature at Knoxville in January was 42.7 degrees which was 4.5 degrees above normal. It ranked as 32nd as Januarys on record. One record high temperature was broken on the 12th when the temperature peaked at 75 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 73 degrees set in 1890. The warmest January at Knoxville was in 1950 when the average temperature was 52.0 degrees.
The monthly-averaged temperature at Tri-Cities in January was 39.9 degrees which was 4.7 above normal. It tied with 1999 as the 15th wamest January on record. One record high temperature was broken on the 12th when the temperature peaked at 71 degrees breaking the old record of 69 degrees set in 2005. Another record high temperature was set on the next day when the temperature reached 73 degrees breaking the previous record of 72 degrees set in 1972. The warmest January at Tri-Cities was in 1950 when the average temperature was 50.1 degrees.
