...PRELIMINARY NWS STORM SURVEY RESULTS FROM RED OAK TORNADO
ON WEDNESDAY 8 OCTOBER 2008...

A STORM DAMAGE SURVEY TEAM FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN
MOBILE JUST COMPLETED THEIR ON SITE ASSESSMENT OF THE DAMAGE THAT
OCCURRED FROM THE TORNADO THAT PASSED NEAR RED OAK ALABAMA (COVINGTON
COUNTY) ON 8 OCTOBER 2008. THE TEAM FOUND A TORNADO DAMAGE PATH THAT
WAS 50 YARDS WIDE AND 2.3 MILES LONG...EXTENDING FROM JUST SOUTHWEST
OF RED OAK TO THE NORTH SIDE OF RED OAK.

MOST OF THE DAMAGE SURVEYED ALONG THE PATH OCCURRED TO TREES THAT
WERE DOWNED OR TWISTED. ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 55 JUST NORTH OF RED
OAK...2 RESIDENCES NEAR THE PATH SUFFERED MINOR DAMAGE...AND A
TRACTOR STORAGE SHED HAD SEVERAL PIECES OF METAL RIPPED OFF.

BASED ON THE DEGREE OF DAMAGE THAT WAS STUDIED IN THE SURVEY...THE
WIND GUSTS FROM THIS TORNADO ARE ESTIMATED TO BE IN THE EF-0
RANGE...OR FROM 65 TO 85 MILES PER HOUR.
